The nomadic appetite of a gourmand. 

Some things are just universal. Like the known scientific fact that the colder and wetter you are, the better bacon smells frying.




Food. The syllable alone makes one salivate so bad. The source of the energy that drives every living being. The matter that makes us a matter that actually matters. It is what every creature needs to stay alive. Yes, we do need water and air too to survive, but food is an entity which we choose to survive with, not because of mere necessity but because of the urge we feel inside our tummies. Food is a universal fuel required to generate horse powers of energy to bring each and every breathing soul under our wide, blue sky to life. Without it, well, let’s just not even think about such a scenario.

Food, like music, has a tendency to bring people together. Food defines individuality like no other. Same like the way we all have our different tastes in the type of music we like listening to, food too has a variety of channels. Cuisines vary like the shades of red. From the Great Barrier Reef to the Rocky Mountains in America, the food across the world is like a platter served by many cultures and clans. The most delighting and exhilarating part of all this is that we, as humans, are so damn lucky that we were gifted with the minds to actually incorporate different flavours into the stuff that we would cook. Now, a sheesh kebab would not be that delicious if it were not for the right herbs and spices. Likewise, the cheese burger at McDonald’s would never be the same without that layer of pickles in between the bun and the patty. We are allowed to experiment, invent, and recreate the food culture that keeps revolutionizing every single second that we live.

Food brings all living beings together. No matter which level of the food chain you belong to, we all love to eat. Let it be from your home with your family, or a fancy restaurant with your partner or even the street corner with your friends, the experience of biting down the first piece of your dish when you are hungry is literally like sighting heaven for the first time. No words can do justice to that taste.

Every living soul fight day in and day out just to attain this basic amenity. Bringing food to the table is even a phrase to show what we actually work for. All of the sweat and pain for that single meal we share amongst our loved ones around a table in the night. There are millions of us who are lucky to have three meals a day, and another million who survives on single morsels of bread to just stay alive until tomorrow. Whichever side of the world you belong to, always remember while you are wasting the last piece of bread in your plate, there is another person who is eating their own waste to stay alive.

According to me, calling yourself a foodie is not something one can be proud of. Yes, all your Instagram followers know you get to eat a lot of food. Being a foodie should have a more moral meaning to it than what meets the eye. Show your society and country who an actual foodie is. Be the charitable soul and donate one of your meals to the ones who could use at least one meal a day. Be strong enough to make others do the same. Be the change to provide your fellow sapiens with the joy of enjoying a complete, balanced diet. Devour what you can, share the rest. People die in this world without even tasting healthy food on a daily basis and yet there are some amongst us who can afford to neglect such suffering due to our parents’ karma. Be not the one to shrug and live by, but the one who cares, gives and shares the pain with them. Sometimes humans forget to notice the plight of other humans. It is time to change that and share your plate with your neighbour in torn clothes. Eat, love, pray.

There are some things that don’t change much. I find the smell of a dish, or the way a certain spice is crushed, or just a quick look at the way something has been put on a plate, can pull me back to another place and time. I love those memories that seem so far away, yet you can hold them and carry them with you, even forget them, and then, with a single taste or hint or a smell, be chaperoned back to a beautiful moment.
